  1. They're Great . . . But 3 Star Review

Posted by on Feb 24th 2020

I got three of these to replace my three old Wayne Dalton wall-mount openers. I think the engineering and build are vastly superior, compared to the old. Install and programming was almost perfectly straightforward. There was almost nothing not to like, and I feel confident we'll have many years of enjoyable use.

    Except . . .

Chamberlain/Liftmaster evidently came up with a new remote communication system called Security + 2.0. I presume this was done for the meritorious purpose of making the system more secure against unauthorized intrusion. So far as that is concerned, good for them.

However, there is a downside. It is that Homelink in vehicles manufactured before about 2013 is not compatible with this system. Chamberlain makes a stopgap solution called a "Compatibility Bridge." Essentially, it's a translator that goes in your garage to program with and receive signals form your older Homelink, then re-broadcasts to your Security + 2.0 system.

All of that, I guess, is fine. But I have three large critiques:

    1. Chamberlain/Liftmaster should warn at the pre-purchase stage about the compatibility issue. Shame on them for not doing so.

    2. Chamberlain/Liftmaster ought to have some very obvious disclosure in the manual about this. They do not. Absent such disclosure, I and my wife spent much frustrating time fruitlessly attempting to program our various vehicle's Homelink systems to the new openers, all the while wondering, pointlessly, why we were failing. It was wasted time and frustration that Chamberlain/Liftmaster could have spared us, if they'd only such courtesy and respect as would have been involved with proper disclosure.

    3. From what I've read, it appears the Compatibility Bridge loses it programming when there is a power outage. Really? Are you kidding? All other elements in the opener/remote system are able to remember their programming. Why in the heck could Chamberlain/Liftmaster not engineer the compatibility bridge to do similarly. This is a very serious failure. Do you think my wife and I want to re-program each of the channels in each or our Homelink-equipped vehicles every time there is a power interruption? Of course we do not. We'll supply the Compatibility Bride with a separate UPS to avoid this, but that simply should not be a need, and shame on Chamberlain/Liftmaster for adding insult to injury by not making building the Compatibility Bridge durable through a power outage.

If not for the above complaints, I would have positively rated this system five stars. If you have newer vehicles with Homelink (and compatible with Security + 2.0), I think you might consider it a 5-star system for you.

  2. Very nice, and quiet 5 Star Review

Posted by on Jun 19th 2019

This is a very nice opener. Took me about 3 hours to install, including removal of my old chain drive unit. This unit is so low profile and quiet. I am very happy that I bought it. Price was good, and delivery in two days. Can't complain.

  3. Great opener 5 Star Review

I already have 2 of these on my garage. I recently built a large workshop with garage type doors on each end. I decided I needed at least one more opener. Installs easily. The controls program very easily. The biggest chore for installation is making sure that there is a good place for mounting and then getting all of the wiring properly secured and trimmed.

  4. 8500 Awesome 5 Star Review

Bought on line on Monday, installed it by Thursday. Excellent product and fast delivery! Highly recommend. Took 2 hours to install this and remove my old style opener.

  5. Best yet 5 Star Review

Posted by on Aug 21st 2018

Wish I'd known about these sooner. I replaced an existing ceiling hung unit to recover the overhead clearance. The additional benefit is that it's super quiet and includes a door locking device. Installation was a simple one-man operation whereas the traditional chain-drive openers require two.
Working with Open Door Discount Remotes was a pleasure and delivery was very prompt.

Step-by-step instructions easy to follow. No problems!

  8. Second one I purchased in a month 5 Star Review

Posted by on Apr 26th 2018

I posted a review of one that I bought on April 14. This one was a little easier since I didn't have any issues with the door installation. The installation was easy and the instructions clear. The unit that I received with this purchase was not quite as well constructed. The fit and finish were just a little off. Threads of bolts and screws were rougher and harder to get into place. The collar was a little different and had one less set of screws to ensure complete and secure connection between the unit and the torsion bar. Nonetheless, the unit works fine and had I not received a little nicer example of the product with my first purchase I wouldn't have known the difference. Still love the various functions and the operation. I'll be adding some additional accessories to this one just as I did the last one...extra wall control and a keypad. Also, it was easy to program my remote control unit for the first door to open this opener and vice versa. Just push the learn button. Couldn't be simpler. I think I'll be buying one more for another building on my property.

  9. Wow 5 Star Review

Posted by on Apr 14th 2018

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. Mine was for a 9 x 8 insulated door with windows. The installation was pretty easy, just followed the instructions...until I got to the setting of the limits of travel. It was then that I encountered a problem. Setting the open limit was not a problem. When I tried to set the close my cables started to unspool. I called the support number for LiftMaster and the person had me conduct several tests and checks, all of which left him mystified. He also told me that these were not supposed to be installed by the homeowner and I should call a garage door installer. I walked away from the project for a few days and returned. I figured out the problem. The tracks were originally installed too close together. The bearings on the door were binding about 2/3 of the way to the top of travel. The same binding occurred when the door started to close. With a normal garage door opener the binding was not noticeable and overcome by the force of the chain and motor. However, with the Liftmaster the door would not travel on its own and the cables started to unspool. I reinstalled the cables, reset the torsion springs.
None of the problems I experienced were caused by the LiftMaster, the hardware supplied or the instructions. All of the problems were as a result of poor workmanship by the original garage door installer.

Once the existing problems were corrected, the LiftMaster worked great. I love the automatic lock, the delayed auto-close and the quiet and smooth operation of the opener. I plan on buying an additional remote and a keypad. I'm also going to buy a LiftMaster for the other bay in my garage and at least one other for one of the other buildings on my property.

  10. Great product, great company 5 Star Review

Posted by on Apr 11th 2018

Ordered lm 8500 for 10x10 doors. Easy install, quiet, efficient in space for mounting and allowability to use space where traditional opener would be in center of door. In addition, For the price it wasn’t much different than buying tradititionaI opener, hardware to support from 14’ ceiling, additional length kit for 10’ door, and brackets to support top of door. I bought the two pack, and although they only had one car remote per package each was simple to program for alternate door. Buying and shipping from Open Door was flawless.
